Our Little Trooper

Well, it has been a pretty tough weekend on our family. Two weeks ago today we took Brody in for his 9 month check up. He had one shot that day, the final round of Hepatitis B. Brody starting running a mild fever on the following morning which ended up coming and going over the next three days and he did not sleep a wink on Thursday night so Mommy decided it would be best to take him back to the doctor since we knew the shot he had does not cause a reaction like this. We found out he had a mild ear infection in his left ear. Brody was given amoxicillin, which is the same medication he took in early December for his double ear infection. Brody was taking the medicine for a week and seemed to be doing a lot better. We woke up on Saturday morning to find Brody covered in large red bumps. We were pretty sure they were hives. Luckily again, our doctor's office is open on Saturday mornings so we were able to get in and see our doctor (she happened to be on call this weekend). Sure enough Brody is allergic to amoxicillin! Mommy found out she was allergic to penicillin as a child and was cautious about giving this medicine to Brody in the first place but the doctor said he may not be allergic as well and the only way to find out was to give it to him. A note to first time parents: We didn't know this but it can take up to 5 different times of giving a child a medication before they react to it. And, Brody didn't react until he was almost finished with it, plus this is the second time he took it. This has been very scary to say the least! They warn you about it affecting their breathing as well which can make any parent scared! Brody continues to prove that he is quite the little trooper and this really doesn't seem to be bothering him much other than he is having a hard time sleeping at night. He woke up looking 10 times worse yesterday but is slowly starting to look better today. He has a large hive by his eye that has now tripled in size and looks like he got into a fight. It is heartbreaking as parents for us to watch him go through this but there is nothing we can do unfortunately. We just have to let the medication leave his system.

On a brighter note, Brody continues to be on the move and into everything. He has figured out how to open the kitchen cupboards and drawers. He is beginning to slowly walk across the furniture and has started to walk with his walking toy with help. One bad habit he has picked up is grinding his teeth now that there are 6 of them and it drives Mommy and Daddy crazy! He is a very strong little boy with quite the little grip. We were able to take Brody out for a drive this weekend with temperatures in the 40's so that was nice. Snow is falling today and looks like it is going to get colder and more snow later this week. Here are some pictures of our little man with his allergic reaction. We had a hard time getting very good pictures of it and we promise it is a lot worse than it looks!

Brody has had quite a year. First a cast & now hives! And all with a smile on his face.
Hope Mom & Dad are still smiling too. Sleepless nights are tough!
Love you all, Grandma Barb
